Methodology: For this study, GOBankingRates analyzed the cost of living in each U.S. state to find the difference in costs for a comfortable retirement and your Social Security benefits. First, GOBankingRates found data for each U.S. state from the U.S. Census American Community Survey for the total population, total households, population ages 65 and over and household median income. For each state the cost-of-living indexes were sourced from Missouri Economic and Research Information Center and using the national average expenditure costs for residents aged 65 and over, as sourced from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey for residents aged 65 and over, the average expenditure costs for each state can be calculated. The average single-family home value was sourced from Zillow Home Value Index from June 2024, and by assuming a 10% down payment and using the national average 30-year fixed mortgage rate as sourced from the Federal Reserve Economic Data, the average mortgage cost can be calculated. The average mortgage and expenditure costs can be used to calculate the total cost of living for each state. Using the 50/30/20 rule that states that needs should not exceed 50% of the household income, the total cost of living was doubled to find the comfortable cost of living for each state. Using the average Social Security benefits, as sourced from the Social Security Administration, the average Social Security Benefits can be calculated. The comfortable cost of living and the Social Security benefits can be used to calculated the difference between the comfortable cost of living and Social Security benefits. All data was collected on and is up to date as of Jul. 22, 2024.
