Have you ever wondered why, when you scroll through Instagram, the second photo in a carousel appears first?
According to Instagram boss Adam Mosseri, that's often because you may have already seen that carousel but haven't swiped, so you get a second chance.
“If someone sees your carousel post but doesn't swipe through, we often give that carousel a second chance and automatically move on to that second medium for the viewer.” Mosseri said in an Instagram Reel.

He added that carousels “often get more reach than photos,” partly because of this second-chance posting, but also because “multiple outlets will mean more engagements with your carousel posts, and more engagements will mean more reach on average.”
Is posting a photo dump on Instagram now embarrassing?
Beyond posting a carousel, Mosseri also said you may want to “add music” to the post if you're trying to increase reach.
“I highly recommend adding music so it can appear in video experiences, like the Reels tab,” Mosseri said. “Now, don't feel like you have to force it, but if you're on the fence and can go in either direction, choosing a carousel instead of a photo will often help you get more reach.”
