Tremendous Smash Bros. creator announces new project in YouTube video


Tremendous Smash Bros.. Creator Masahiro Sakurai capped off his extensive YouTube series on game development with a final video that not only delves into the channel's creation process, but also reveals that the famous designer was working on a new game.

At the beginning of the video, Sakurai revealed that he received a request for a game proposal, which was approved. However, he had to wait a while for the team to be assembled and go into production, aiming for April 2022. That meant he had about seven months between the release of the last playable character, Sora, in Tremendous Smash Bros. Final and your next project.

“I'm sorry I can't share more about this project, but assuming we can get it done, sooner or later it should be announced,” he explained.

When the channel launched, this new game was in production. That was in 2022, so it's either been in production for about two years or canceled since then. Either way, it appears to be in the early days of development based on Sakurai's comments.

This latest also looks at the making process of all the movies, including why he decided to take on the project in the first place. Partly it was about having something to do during the seven-month break, but he also wanted to share his vast experience with others.

“How can I pass on the knowledge I have acquired over the years to as many people as possible? I thought about that for a long time. Ultimately, I decided to create this channel: a lasting archive of information that people can access whenever they want.”

The series ultimately contains around 260 movies, which were published in Japanese and English (i.e. around 520 movies in total). Sakurai said that he wrote all the scripts himself over a period of one month, categorized them by theme, and scheduled everything. Most of the images in the movies were also filmed two and a half years ago. He made a couple of pilots, showed them to Nintendo, and got permission and support from the company to use official assets and footage. He worked with Hike Inc. to edit and produce the videos starting in 2022.

Sakurai, who worked with Nintendo at HAL Laboratory before leaving in the early 2000s, mentioned that making the channel cost around $600,000 (or 90 million yen), and that video editing and translation expenses represented the most of the budget. This was much more than he anticipated, although he added that it could have been more if he had had to pay people for writing and filming instead of simply taking on responsibilities himself. It also generates zero income.

“Even I think that's a little silly,” he said. “However, and I mean this, I consider this an investment towards a better future for gaming.”
