Cheese bandits made off with a staggering amount of cheddar cheese from one of the UK's most famous cheese shops.

Neal's Yard Dairy announced in a social media post that the thieves, “posing as a legitimate wholesale distributor for a major French retailer,” ordered more than 950 wheels of cloth-bound Hafod, Westcombe and Pitchfork cheddar cheese.

The cheese was worth around $390,000, the company revealed.

Neal's Yard Dairy reportedly delivered 22 metric tons (48,488 pounds) of cheddar cheese before realizing the wholesale distributor was fake.

The dairy retailer said they covered the cost of the theft that affected smaller cheesemakers.
