Man United “were rejected by the highly rated Bundesliga boss when considering replacing Erik ten Hag in the summer” before opting to keep the Dutchman under fire.

According to a report, Manchester United were brought down during an approach by Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness during the summer.

The club opted not to sack Erik ten Hag after undertaking a lengthy end-of-season review following their FA Cup triumph at Wembley, but the Dutchman remains under pressure after a slow start to the new campaign.

United figures, led by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sir Dave Brailsford, spoke to several potential replacements, including Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi, and are believed to have discussed financial matters with both managers.

Ten Hag was eventually asked to remain in his position after Brailsford and a club delegation flew to meet him during his holiday in Ibiza.

However, it has now emerged that United are also considering appointing Hoeness.

image have claimed that contact was made with the 42-year-old, who also attracted interest from both Chelsea and Bayern Munich, only for him to reject United.

Hoeness led his Stuttgart team to an impressive second place in the Bundesliga last season, only behind Bayer Leverkusen and ahead of giants Bayern.

He is said to have been flattered by United's sales pitch but, believing his work in Germany was not yet done, he turned down the opportunity to join them.

Ten Hag, who appeared to be on the verge of the ax in May despite winning two trophies in as many years, was retained after an extension to his contract was triggered.

But he is under increasing pressure after a series of poor results this season. Tuchel and Graham Potter have been linked with the bench.

United officials held a scheduled meeting at INEOS headquarters in Knightsbridge last week and the future of Ten Hag was discussed.

No official clarity has been provided over his future, the club remains silent and Ten Hag is preparing for his team's return to action against Brentford next weekend.

The 54-year-old went on holiday after United's goalless draw against Aston Villa before the international break, confident he would not be sacked.

Ten Hag has overseen United's worst start to a Premier League season as they sit 14th with just eight points from their opening seven games. Unfortunately, the Pink Devils are also winless in their last five matches in all competitions.

The Sun have reported that a new name has come into play: Edin Terzic, who left Borussia Dortmund after their defeat in the Champions League final.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, brought in as Ten Hag's assistant during a coaching change over the summer, could fill the role temporarily should the coach be sacked.
