While Romeo + Juliet is one of William Shakespearethe most famous tragedies, Jack Antonoff I forgot about that part while creating music for the Broadway revival.
“When I think Romeo + Juliet“And I was doing this in music, I think about hope and love and finding something and running with it against all odds,” Antonoff, 40, said during the Sunday, October 13, episode of CBS Sunday morning. “I always forget about all the death.”
He added: “So I started going back and stitching that into the score without knowing it, but I'm implying that it's going to be horrible because I forgot!”
The Bleachers musician created a completely new score for Sam GoldThe Broadway production of Romeo + Julietwhat stars Package Connor and Raquel Zegler as the star-crossed, star-crossed lovers in their respective Nice White Approach debuts. (For those, like Antonoff, who forgot: teenagers Romeo and Juliet end up committing suicide after miscommunication and family disputes prevented them from being together.)
Gold's production reinvented the classic play by presenting it in the round at New York City's Circle Within the Sq. theater. The cast members also wear more modern clothing (Connor's sequin pants will always be famous to Us) and even sing a few songs between monologues.
“[Sam Gold] He came to us and said: 'It's a Troy Sivan music video.' That's how he presented it,” Zegler, 23, said during a September appearance on the Tonight's show starring Jimmy Fallon. “He also said very profound things like, 'It's a group of twenty-somethings who broke into Circle Within the Square on Broadway and they need to let off some steam.'
He added: “The play really deals with a lot of things that somehow relate to a modern audience, even though it was written 500 years ago.”
Connor, 20, also noted during the evening show that playing Shakespeare is “something I've wanted to do for a long time.”
“I think, as a British actor, you're often encouraged to do it if you haven't done it,” he said. Stops the heart effusive star to welcome Jimmy Fallon.
Perhaps Antonoff was expected to focus primarily on the romanticism of Shakespeare's work, since he himself lives in a dream world. Antonoff is not only at the top of his game professionally: he also produces for companies like Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter in addition to making his own Bleachers albums, and married the actress Margaret Qualley last year.
“It's still surreal because one of the only promises of the work I do is how fleeting it is, not the performance or the audience, but that kind of success,” Antonoff said Sunday. “So, there's never a moment where I'm not in awe of everything.”
