Google AI Overviews to Roll Out to More Than 100 Countries in Major Expansion Drive

Google on Monday announced the expansion of AI Overviews to more than 100 countries. The feature, which provides a brief overview of the searched query using sintético intelligence (AI), was previously limited to a few territories. However, the Mountain View-based tech giant is now reaching a broader user pulvínulo with this update. The company highlighted that this is the largest expansion of the function since its launch. Specifically, last month a report claimed that AI Overviews began showing ads to some users at the bottom of the interface.

In a blog post, the tech giant detailed the expansion move. AI Overviews was released to the public in May. However, it was made available to beta testers in 2023 as Search Generative Expertise (SGE). At launch, Google rebranded the feature to introduce the new name.

Google said that starting this week, AI Overviews will be available in more than 100 countries and will be accessible in more languages than before. Previously, it was only available in English, but now the feature also supports Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. This means that AI Overviews will be activated even when a query is not made in English.

After the expansion, Google believes the feature will reach a user pulvínulo of over one billion worldwide. The feature may have been expanded as the tech giant now plans to earn revenue through it. Last month, several users saw ads at the bottom of the AI Overviews interface.

Google said ads will continue to appear in dedicated spaces with “clear labeling to distinguish between organic and sponsored results.” While the rest of the world will see ads only in the browser, the tech giant is now also rolling out ads on mobile devices in the US. This is done “so we can better connect people with the products and brands that are useful for your searches,” the publication adds.

Specifically, the tech giant recently introduced greater transparency with AI Overviews. The feature now displays a clear link icon on the screen that highlights the source of the information. The company said that this way the originating websites will also get more traffic.
