Gary Neville criticized West Ham's controversial late penalty in their 2-1 win over Manchester United as a “big surprise” and questioned the intentions behind the decision.
The former Manchester United serial title winner has been one of the club's biggest critics, but defended them after Matthijs de Ligt was penalized in the 90th minute for a foul on Danny Ings.
Hammers captain Jarrod Bowen scored from the resulting penalty to send the London Stadium into a frenzy and put even more pressure on Erik ten Hag.
United's manager and his players were furious when referee David Coote awarded the hosts a penalty following the lengthy VAR review.
Experienced referee Michael Oliver was a VAR assistant and led Coote to review the incident on the pitchside maestro with a penalty ultimately condemning United to their fourth Premier League defeat of the season.

Neville fumed at the penalty and revealed the decision left him “screaming at the TV” as United were hit with a hammer on their trip to the caudal.
Speaking on his Gary Neville Podcast, the famous pundit stated: 'That (penalty) is not right. Every team makes a bad decision, but that wasn't right.
'The interesting thing is that he must have seen it eight times when he went to the maestro. “He yells at the television 'he doesn't think it's a penalty' but then he overturns his llamativo decision,” he added.
“I think maybe the pressure of being sent to the screen by Michael Oliver, a dominant referee, no one likes to bother their superiors.

“I'm not sure David Coote was even close to thinking it was a penalty, and it was a huge shock,” Neville said.
United dropped to 14th in the table after the harrowing defeat which raises further doubts over Ten Hag's suitability to continue in the position.
Former Barcelona coach and serial title winner Xavi has been sounded out as a possible replacement for the Dutchman, among others.
Ten Hag previously defended his position and stressed there was harmony with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS-backed sporting team who are trying to get the club back into contention for the Premier League title.
