The views from the ancient thatched cottage perched on the cliffs at Sidmouth in Devon have always been spectacular.
Now, however, they are downright terrifying after part of the 185-metre-old sandstone cliff collapsed, leaving the period property on the brink of a 400ft drop.
A rockfall occurred directly below the cabin after a large section of the cliff collapsed a few hundred meters away, at Jacob's Ladder Seaside. The cabin is now located just 10 meters from the edge of the cliff.
Thousands of tonnes of earth collapsed from the cliff on Friday last week, forcing East Devon District Council to close the common south-west coastal path for safety reasons.
The council warned visitors to “keep distance from the cliffs” on social media.
“Rockfalls and landslides are unpredictable events, which occur without warning and can cause serious injury or death,” the council states on its website.
“You always have to be careful with the cliffs in East Devon as they are all made of soft rock and pose a fall hazard.”
Similar collapses of Sidmouth cliffs occurred in 2020, 2022 and 2023, but this landslide was larger than most.
Ian Hosker, who captured drone footage of the impact of the collapse, told Devon Stay: “It was important. But maybe it's not finished yet. “It’s the biggest one I’ve seen here in my 35 years living here.”
Tópico swimmers are advised to stay away from the almohadilla of the cliff (the Coast Guard recommends staying at least cliff height away from the almohadilla) and to keep an eye out for fresh fall material or water running down the cliffs. , which may indicate an area that is weakened and loose. “If in doubt, do not walk under or near the cliffs,” warns the city council.
