The Montreal Canadians are heading to Russia to see the fifth overall pick in this year's NHL draft in person.
In the “Saturday Headlines” segment of Hockey night in CanadaSportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that the Canadiens plan to visit Russia to watch Ivan Demidov play in the KHL.
“At the time the Canadiens drafted (Demidov), they made plans that at some point they would eventually go during the season to see him, visit him, check in and see how he was doing,” Friedman said. “They are scheduling that trip now and it will take place in the coming weeks or months.”

Demidov has one year left on his KHL contract with St. Petersburg, and a veteran Russian hockey executive and scout confirmed to Sportsnet's Emily Sadler that the five-foot-11 forward “is committed to honoring (his) contract and coming to North America then expires.”
Sportsnet's Jason Bukala ranked the left winger as the No. 2 player ahead of the 2024 NHL Draft, behind only overall top pick Macklin Celebrini.
