Jamie Carragher has praised Manchester United's Rasmus Hojlund, who is “starting to look like a player”, according to the former Liverpool defender.

Hojlund has had a tough time at United so far after signing from Atalanta for £72m last summer, scoring 16 goals in all competitions but struggling to find the consistency many expected.

He missed the start of this season due to injury but is now fit and fully fit and is expected to lead the line for United as they look to turn their fortunes around following their worst start to a Premier League season.

The 21-year-old scored his second goal of the campaign against Brentford at the weekend with a fine chip to score the winner, and Carragher is starting to like what he sees from United's No.9.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he praised Hojlund, suggesting he could be the answer to the attacking problems United have had in recent years.

However, he scored the winning goal against Brentford and has looked in good form since returning from injury.

“Hojlund, I think he's starting to look like a player,” Carragher said. “I was really impressed with him in Porto a couple of weeks ago; “It made a big change.”

He added: “There is real talent among the front three, but I think the man who scores the winning goal is starting to look like a player.”

United will hope that Brentford's victory will take them a step forward to improve their fortunes this season.

Before the game, they had gone five games without a win, and things looked ominous when Ethan Pinnock controversially headed the visitors home from a corner.

But Alejandro Garnacho scored early in the second half thanks to a brilliant cross from Marcus Rashford, and Hojlund ensured the points remained at Outdated Trafford.

Meanwhile, Carragher detailed why he could see a glimmer of hope for United coming out of the game.

“The first three,” he began. “We talked about Marcus Rashford being better suited to the left, but he played on the right and I think it was one of his best games we've seen.

'Garnacho scores a great goal on the left side. “I think the combination of those three forwards is maybe something that can keep them ahead.”
