Jamie Carragher picks the England XI he hopes will accompany Thomas Tuchel when he starts work in 2025… with a superstar out

Jamie Carragher has named what he anticipates England's starting line-up will be when Thomas Tuchel becomes head coach in 2025.

Tuchel was confirmed as Gareth Southgate's permanent successor on October 16, three months after his resignation following the Three Lions' defeat in the final of Euro 2024 against Spain.

The former Chelsea manager will start his £6million-a-year role on January 1 and will become England's third foreign manager after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Tuchel will arrive at St. Georges Park after leaving his position as coach of Bayern Munich in May, where he coached England captain Harry Kane.

However, Carragher believes Kane's time as the Three Lions' main man could come to an end under his former boss.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football coverage of Nottingham Forest’s win over Crystal Palace, Carragher said: “Gareth Southgate’s main stays were (Harry) Maguire, (John) Stones, (Declan) Rice and ( Harry) Kane.

'For me, it was Kane's team in the summer. This is no longer his team, although he has a great relationship (with them), the team has to be for the young attacking players.”

One of the younger players to impress during Lee Carsley's interim reign has been Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Liverpool full-back was not always used by Southgate and even experimented as a midfielder during the European Championship.

However, since Carsley came through the door, Alexander-Arnold has secured the right-back position, winning three Man of the Match awards in four games under the caretaker manager.

And Carragher believes the 26-year-old should be part of a lively new back four under Tuchel.

“I would look at Trent, Stones and I think (Jarrad) Branthwaite, the left foot, the size and the presence,” added the former Liverpool defender.

“(Levi) Colwill again, Rice, Bellingham here a little further back, (Bukayo) Saka has to play on the right wing, Cole Palmer has to play there.”

While Carragher is convinced Palmer should start for the Three Lions, he doesn't feel the same about Phil Foden, who has just four goals in 41 internationals for his country.

“I would play with (Anthony) Gordon if Kane is still the best, he needs pace around him. Phil Foden still hasn't done enough in an England shirt.

“What I would say about Bellingham is: is he good enough to play as a central midfielder in a two-man team and defend with Rice?

'You transform it into a different formation with the ball. Rice enters, Bellingham enters, the first three. That would be the kind of setup I would like England to adopt.

“Harry Kane has to stay up front or pick someone who has pace. You can't get in. Will someone take his place in the United States? It'll be right on the edge.'

While Tuchel arrives with a track record of winning trophies, his appointment was not welcomed by everyone in England.

Since news of his appointment broke, numerous former footballers and coaches have criticized the FA's decision to appoint a foreign coach.

FA boss Mark Bullingham revealed that “some English candidates” were interviewed among the 10 coaches they discussed the job with.

Carragher is surprised that both Eddie Howe (left) and Graham Potter (right) were not considered for the role.

But it has since been revealed that neither Eddie Howe nor Graham Potter, who had been linked with the role, were interviewed for the job.

“If you're interviewing ten people and Potter and Howe have said they haven't been interviewed, something's not right,” Carragher continued. “I would prefer the FA to come out and say it. Don't try to deceive us: assume your decision.

“It reminds me of a decision at club level, a team is very close and we are going for an absolute winner.”
