The iPhone 17 Professional series is said to have a 48-megapixel telephoto camera and 12GB of RAM; iPhone 17 Air may use the A19 chip

Apple introduced the iPhone 16 series last month with a new camera control, action button on all models, and new chipsets. The launch of the iPhone 17 family is still a year away, but the latest rumors suggest that Apple could have something new up its sleeve for next year's models. A well-known analyst claims that the iPhone 17 Professional models will come with a notable camera upgrade. Both the iPhone 17 Professional and iPhone 17 Professional Max are said to feature a new rear camera with a telephoto lens. Meanwhile, a new iPhone 17 Air (Slim) model is said to replace the iPhone Plus model next year.

As reported by Macrumors, Jeff Pu of Haitong Worldwide Tech Analysis outlined his expectations for the iPhone 17 series in his latest research note. The analyst believes that the iPhone 17 Professional and iPhone 17 Professional Max will arrive with a 48-megapixel telephoto rear camera and a 12-megapixel selfie shooter. For comparison, the current iPhone 16 Professional and iPhone 16 Professional Max have 12-megapixel telephoto and front cameras.

On top of that, the iPhone 17 Professional pair is said to be equipped with 12GB of RAM, up from 8GB for the iPhone 16 Professional models. Improved memory could help improve Apple Intelligence performance and multitasking. Likewise, Pu believes that Apple will provide a “much narrower dynamic island” in the iPhone 17 Professional Max model as a result of the device adopting a smaller “metal” for the Face ID system.

Like its 2024 counterparts, the iPhone 17 Professional will have a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 17 Professional Max will have a 6.9-inch display, according to the report. Both models are said to be powered by a new A19 Professional chip made using the same TSMC 3nm process.

iPhone 17 Air specifications

The report includes details about the rumored iPhone 17 Air, also known as iPhone 17 Slim. Jeff Pu reiterates that it will include a 6.6-inch screen, 8 GB of RAM and Dynamic Island. It could be powered by a 3nm A19 Bionic chip that will also be present in the base iPhone 17.

Additionally, the iPhone 17 Air may feature Apple's first 5G modem. It is said to have a 48-megapixel rear camera and a 24-megapixel front camera. It may have an aluminum frame. Pu says that this model will have a completely new design.

Based on previous iPhone release schedules, the iPhone 17 series is expected to be announced in September 2025 with the base iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Professional, iPhone 17 Professional Max, and the new slimmer iPhone 17 Air. We can expect more details about the series to emerge in the coming months.
