It's clown season… and while “Joker: Folie à Deux” was supposed to reign as the Clown Prince of Cinema, a creepier harlequin is taking the box office by storm.
“Terrifier 3,” a low-budget gory horror film that follows a serial killer dressed as a clown, hit the box office last week and has already surpassed “Joker 2”… grossing $18 million, while “ Joker 2”' made just $7 million this weekend.
We sit with David Howard Thornton – who played Artwork the Clown in all three 'Terrifer' films – and tells us he's stunned… calling this a David and Goliath showdown of a small indie film against a massive studio project.
DHT attributes the success to two things: the rabid fan base of the 'Terrifier' series and staying true to the soul of the films.
David says that the studios approached the film with offers of financing, but the financiers wanted to change the films in a way that the creative team was uncomfortable with… so they rejected the offers.
David says he thinks a big problem with movie theaters is that studios don't make movies that people need to see in large groups… so there's less incentive to go out and see a movie. He notes that “Terrifier 3” is at its best when viewed collectively, a big plus in his column.
By the way… David has a lot to say about the 'Joker' movies: watch until the end to find out why he's so surprised that the sequel is flopping.
As you already know… “Joker: Folie à Deux” had a bad opening week at the box office and seems about to lose a lot of money. Sources have told outlets such as Variety the film needs to make $450 million to break even. To date, it has only grossed around $215 million worldwide.
“Joker: Folie à Deux” has only 33% on Rotten Tomatoes and an abysmal score on the review aggregator.
Simply put, “Terrifier 3” is hot… although we imagine Warner Bros. executives are more scared about the box office revenue of the new “Joker” movie!
